1B - Mrs Bottomley

Welcome to Year 1. The children are settling in well and we look forward to sharing new experiences together this term.

We are participating in a whole school Take One project which will involve looking in depth at a painting called ‘The Fighting Temeraire’, by J M W Turner. We will focus on the sunset in the painting to produce poetry and artwork. To support this project, we will be visiting The National Gallery on 11th October to view the painting.

In Maths, we will be teaching a variety of mathematical skills, including number operations, place value, data handling and simple properties of shapes. We will encourage the children’s enjoyment of Maths through fun, practical activities in order to develop their questioning, understanding and reasoning skills.

Our Science topics this term will be “Ourselves’, in which we will be learning about our five senses, and later on, ‘Materials’.  We hope to visit the Greenwich Heritage Centre in Woolwich to support our science work on materials and history learning on toys from the past.

Barnaby Bear is looking forward to his visits to children’s homes on weekends where he can share special times and keep a diary of his visits, which will support our Geography learning throughout the year.

There is further information about the term and our class routines, including ways in which parents can help, on the Year 1 newsletter. Please click on the link below.

Thank you for your support.
