6BH - Mrs Baldwin and Mrs Huggett

Welcome to Year 6. The children have settled well and are becoming familiar with the routines of the class.

The Science Topic this term is ‘Light ‘and we will build on the children’s previous learning about shadows and how light travels.

In literacy, we will be working on improving children’s reading stamina, pace and enjoyment as well as developing their comprehension skills. We will begin the term with a focus on autobiographical writing linked to the whole school Take One project. We have already visited the National Gallery to see the 'Take One' painting, 'The Fighting Temeraire' where we had a really engaging workshop.
Later in the term we will move onto ‘Chillers and Thrillers’.

Children will continue to consolidate the Maths covered in Year 5, with more emphasis this year on understanding and using decimals, fractions and percentages. We will be consolidating the formal written methods for all 4 operations and teaching children to apply these to more complex multi-step problems.

Our main History topic over the coming terms is World War Two and its impact.

This will form a significant part of several curriculum areas after half-term:

In literacy, we will be looking at stories, fact and fiction, based on the events of WW2.
We have visits booked to The Imperial War Museum in October.
We hope to hold a World War 2 Day at school in the Spring Term – more news to follow.

In DT we will be designing and making controllable World War 2 vehicles.

The children will be developing their use of French this term using geographical terminology.

In Geography, we will be developing map work skills and their understanding of the physical and human features of rural and urban locations.

We will be linking computing to our whole school project using ‘I Can Animate’.

Our focus this term in art is using mixed media to produce outcomes linked to the whole school ’Take One’ project.
